Mardy Fish beats Florian Mayer to swim through round two – BNP Paribas Masters 2011
America’s number one, Mardy Fish, cruised through the second round of the BNP Paribas Masters, in Paris, France, defeating the 22nd ranked German competitor, Florian Mayer, on Wednesday evening.
The ninth ranked Fish blasted his way through the matchup against Mayer, outclassing him in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to move in to the round of 16 of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 1000 event. The unseeded
German hung in the contest for merely 56 minutes before surrendering to the belligerence of the seventh seed Fish in the second set.
It was a completely one-sided affair, with Fish dominating every minute of play. The seventh seed dropped just three of the total 15 games being played in the competition and rocketed away to victory in less than an hour’s time.
It was his 43rd victory of the running season, with 21 defeats to his name already.
Mayer, who now trails 1-3 against Fish, appeared in all sorts of confusion right from the beginning of the match, spraying a number of errant strokes all over the court. He stood victorious against the American number one in their
last encounter at the Wimbledon Championships in 2010 but failed to pose the similar sort of performance with his racquet on Wednesday evening.
The seventh seed American converted four of his eight break opportunities in the matchup, without facing a single one from the bleak German opponent. Fish dropped merely two points on his first serve, clinching 23 out of 25 points
en route to victory.
Fish is now at number eight in the ATP year-to-date rankings and needs just one more win to assure his place in the prestigious filed of the circuit grand finale, the ATP World Tour Finals in London, later this month.
“I have never been in this position before, so it’s hard not to look at the race and the rankings,” admitted Fish after his win over Mayer. “I’m a human being like everyone else, so I have looked at it a lot and know all the scenarios. Also
know that if I win one more match then I’m in, so that’s the goal.”
Fish will take on the Valencia finalist, Juan Monaco of Argentina, in the round number three to fight for a place in the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters. The Argentine made a huge upset in the second round when he outplayed
the world number 14, Gilles Simon of France, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, to advance to the round of 16.
