Mardy Fish crushes Matthew Ebden in the second round – Rogers Cup 2012
Seeded 11th in the draw, Mardy Fish of USA scored a one sided win over Australia’s lucky loser, Matthew Ebden, to reach the third round of Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada on Tuesday.
The American player dropped just two games in the entire encounter and needed just 53 minutes to seal it in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
Fish came roaring in the match, as he grabbed first three games to gain a 3-0 lead. Ebden held his serve in the fourth one to open his account, reducing the trail to 1-3. However, the Australian could not do the same when he served
to stay in the set at 2-5, losing 2-6.
Currently ranked 13th in the world, Fish banged in three aces and amazingly captured all the 10 points on the first serves. The American star was the better player in all departments of the game except first returns,
losing six of the nine points on them. The California, USA resident pocketed six of the 10 second delivery and seven of the 13 second reply points in the opener.
The former world number seven, Fish, played near flawlessly in the second set, as he did not allow Ebden to claim even a single game, breaking him three times and holding all of his own serves to close it 6-0.
Fish’s right ankle injury, which hampered his game in the last few weeks, is not fully healed up yet and needs some more rest but he is not ready to stop playing.
The American said, last week, “That's a tough thing, because it needs rest and I'm just not going to give it rest. I can't give it rest. I'm not going to miss these tournaments.”
Fish has now got consistency his game, which was not there till couple of years back. He added, ''I feel like I can go out against someone like I played tonight and not lose. That's important. You'd be surprised, in years past
I felt like I could really beat anyone, but I could also lose to anyone on any given day. And I feel like if I play relatively normal right now - I have the confidence, anyway, it might not be true - I have the confidence that I don't lose many matches like
that anymore.''
The American participant will face the seventh seed, Juan Monaco of Argentina, in the round of 16. Monaco beat local player, Vasek Pospisil, in the second round.
