Mardy Fish dumps Andreas Beck with double breadstick in round one – Dubai Tennis Championships 2012
World number eight, Mardy Fish, blasted his way to the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships by overpowering the 97th ranked German opponent, Andreas Beck, on day one of the tournament. The American
veteran took barely an hour to root out Beck in twin-sets, 6-1, 6-1, to move into the round of 16 at the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Seeded at number six in the tournament draw, Fish exhibited yet another display of sheer domination and power to annihilate his opponent in the most assertive manner. He spared merely two games for his opponent in the entire matchup,
registering breadstick in each set to wrap up the contest in an authoritative fashion.
"It's nice to get through quickly early in the tournaments, but it gets tough from here on out for sure," said Fish after registering his third victory of the 2012 ATP season. "I returned well. I had one shaky moment there in the
second set to keep my ground and keep the momentum on my side. These courts suit me very well. It's a pretty nice part of the world."
The 30-year-old American has been going through a bad run of form for the last couple of months but his Monday’s performance was far satisfactory for his fans. Although Fish had a below par serve precision of merely 39 per cent,
he dropped just two points on his first serve, claiming 16 out of 18 points en route to victory. Six aces from his racquet earned him some un-fought points to ease his way to an emphatic triumph.
The sixth seed was off to a five-game killing spree right from the beginning, nailing two consecutive break points to rocket away to 5-0 in the opening 15 minutes of play. Beck finally held his serve for the first time in the sixth
game and it was after saving a break point. Fish carried on with his impetus and held his serve in the seventh game to seal the opener at 6-1.
The following set was no different from the opening one; with Fish breaking the German serve in the first game and holding to lead 2-0 early. Beck took the scores to 1-3 before two more crushing break points ended his voyage in
Dubai. Fish closed out the match with the identical scores of 6-1, marching into the second round of the tournament.
