Mardy Fish edges pass Marcel Granollers on opening day - Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number nine, Mardy Fish from the United States, ignites his Wimbledon Championships campaign in an excellent manner, defeating the 48th ranked Spaniard Marcel Granollers in the opening round clash on Monday.
The crowd at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, witnessed an enthralling action-packed contest on the opening day of the Grand Slam tournament, with Fish winning in the end. The American
wrapped up his straight sets victory at 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-4, taking two hours and twenty two minutes of intense match play to book a berth in the second round of the mega event.
The contest was evenly poised, as both men threw their best at each other to come out as the winner. Only one serve break was seen in the entire matchup, with the opening two sets being decided in tie breaker rounds. The only break
point was registered by Fish in the third set, when he converted his third break opportunity to conclude the match.
Granollers hung in the contest all the way but kept losing points on crucial occasions of the contest and remained at a disadvantage. The Spaniard didn’t craft a single break opportunity in the whole matchup and eventually had
to submit the contest to the American opponent in the third set to end his voyage at Wimbledon.
The most eminent feature of the match was the mighty serve of Fish, who delivered his first serve with 73 per cent precision and fired 26 thudding aces to the opponent’s court. Granollers replied with just two aces as Fish reeled
off 58 out of 69 first serve points en route to victory.
The opener took off with both men exchanging cracking winners down the line, without belting a serve break. 12 aces came from the American’s racquet in the first set alone, as the scores got tied at 6-6 to enforce a tie breaker
round. Granollers failed to contain his opponent in the tie breaker and dropped the first set at 6-7(3).
The following set was a complete replication of the first one, as none of the players could register a serve break. Another tie breaker came into play and again Fish took the decider to seal the second set at 7-6(5).
The American finally broke in for the first time in the third set and it proved sufficient for him to conclude victory at 6-4, sending him into the second round of Wimbledon Championships. Fish will play against Denis Istomin of
Uzbekistan in the second round encounter later this week.
