Mardy Fish ends Albert Ramos’ run at the 2011 US Men’s Clay Court Championships
Top seeded American Mardy Fish gusted away his second round opponent Albert Ramos of Spain in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, taking one hour and thirty two minutes of play to step into the quarterfinals of the tournament. Ramos stood
victorious against Brian Dabul in the first round, crushing the Argentine in two sets 6-4, 7-5.
While the American cruised through his second round match at the event, Ramos on the other hand had a tough time in his most recent matches. The 23-year-old Spaniard had to face early exits in his most recent tournaments. His latest
performance came at the 2011 Barletta Open where he was moved past by the wildcard entrant Aljaz Bedene in the round of 16. Furthermore he couldn’t reach the finals of Marrakech, Morocco where he got defeated by the Frenchman Augustin Gensse in the quarterfinals.
Although his presence at the quarterfinals showed his mental strength, but being defeated by a lower ranked opponent also suggests that he is a sloppy starter too.
In the opening set, the American created 100 percent break point opportunities efficiently and cruised into the next round with a 6-3 score line. His first serve percentage was 58 per cent but he secured 87 percent serve points
in the game. Ramos cashed in 78 percent point of his first serves in time but his double faults count made him lose the first set, going one down in the set score.
The American top seed was simply overwhelming in his second set again where he broke the Spaniard in the fifth and third game with a 6-4 score line. Fish crafted 6 of 7 breakpoint opportunities with 67 percent points on first serves.
The second set saw total number of 5 aces; three were coming from the lower ranked Spaniard. Nonetheless the Spaniard’s overall performance in the second set was excellent as he cashed in 79 percent points on his 45 percent first serves but he again double
faulted twice to hand out the final set.
Comparing their overall match facts, nothing appeared too different in their first serves conversion rate but the consequential factor between them was their breakpoints opportunities. The Spaniard hardly converted three of his
six break chances, while the American stood proficient too convert them as he saved eight out of nine and emerged victorious with straight sets.
Since turning pro back in 2000, Fish has come forward as one of the America’s top rising stars ever in the history of ATP. He has produced a lot of quality performances since his arrival at the Tennis Arena. He now moves on ahead
to face Kei Nishikori of Japan in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
