Mardy Fish prevails over David Goffin in the round of 32 – Wimbledon Championships 2012
World number 12, Mardy Fish of USA, moved to the fourth round at the All England Club for just the second time in his 12-year career, as he defeated Belgian youngster, David Goffin, in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(6), 7-6(6) in the round
of 32 of the Wimbledon Championships.
There was no break at the start of the contest, as both players held their serve in the first five games to take the score to 3-2 in favour of Fish. The American struck in the sixth and capitalised on it to seal the first set 6-3.
The second set saw far tougher competition than the opener, as Fish and Goffin did not allow each to break serve till the end, levelling the score at 6-6 and forcing a tie-breaker. Both players kept fighting and went at par till
6-6 but then the American hit a couple of superb forehand winners to capture it 7-6(6).
In the third set, the proceedings went in almost similar fashion as the second one, as Fish and Goffin won their entire serve games with ease to square off the score at 6-6 and take it to a tie-breaker. The Belgian got to a flying
start this time, capturing four of the opening five points to race to a 4-1 lead but Fish completely turned it around afterwards, as he bagged seven of the following nine, winning it 7-6(6).
The American number two needed two hours and 16 minutes to claim victory in an equally contest match.
Fish won most of the points with the help of his strong serves, as he bombarded 17 aces on his opponent and captured incredibly 59 of the 66 on his first deliveries.
While talking to the reporters in the post match press conference, he said, “He'll be a good player. He got better and better every set today. I served well and was sort of able to control the match with my serve. I played much
better today than I did in the past two matches, for sure. This was the best player that I played so far. It was windy out there. I used that to my advantage. Growing up in Florida and playing in windy conditions most of my life, that doesn't bother me.”
The American star will take on the fifth seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, in the round of 16. Tsonga beat Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko in straight sets in the third round.
