Mardy Fish pulls out from the Davis Cup tie against France – Tennis News
America’s top player, Mardy Fish, has withdrawn from his country’s Davis Cup tie against France due to a health scare, according to the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
USA will be facing one of the top European nations in tennis, France, in the second round of Davis Cup, World Group tie to be held in Monte Carlo this weekend.
Upcoming talent, Ryan Harrison, will be added to the American Squad. Harrison will join USA’s second best player, John Isner, and the best doubles team in the history of the sport, Bob and Mike Bryan, in the team.
USTA’s website stated that Fish faced a minor health problem during the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami last week and visited doctors there. He has been advised a rest for at least two to three days and this stopped him from reaching
Monte Carlo.
Fish said, "I am extremely disappointed that I am physically unable to join the U.S. Davis Cup team in Monte Carlo for this week’s tie against France.”
The Los Angeles, California resident was thrashed by Juan Monaco of Argentina in straight sets 1-6, 3-6 in the quarterfinal at the Sony Ericsson Open last week.
The American added, "I had a minor health scare in Miami last week and stayed in Florida to heed the doctor’s recommendation to rest for a few days. I hope to be able to resume my training later this week and possibly compete next
week in Houston. I value every opportunity to compete in Davis Cup and wish I could be with my team-mates this week."
Fish did not have an impressive season so far, having a 7-5 win/loss record. Playing his first event of the year, the American was stunned by the then world number 71, Alejandro Falla, in the second round at the Australian Open
in Januaray.
Though, Fish had a major role in USA’s win over Switzerland in the opening round tie. He defeated Swiss number two, Stanislas Wawrinka, in a five set thriller 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 9-7 in the first rubber.
Americans whitewashed their Swiss opponents 5-0, as Isner surprised 16-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, in the second rubber and Fish partnered Mike Bryan to defeated Federer and Wawrinka in the doubles match.
France’s second best option, Gael Monfils, also announced his withdrawal from the tie with a stomach injury earlier on Monday.
World number 13, Gilles Simon, will replace Monfils and join Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra in the French squad.
