Mardy Fish routs Frank Dancevic to reach third round – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
Eighth seed, Mardy Fish of USA, defeated Frank Dancevic of Canada in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(1) in the second round at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami on Saturday.
Fish grabbed a break in the fourth game of the first set and consolidated on it, building a 4-1 lead. The American made the most of the opportunity and served it out at 5-3.
The 30-year-old sent blistering serves, bombarding seven aces. The American captured 12 of the 13 first and eight of the 10 second delivery points. In comparison, Dancevic also fared well on the first serves, as he fired three
aces and won nine of the 10 points on them. However, the Canadian performed poorly on the second ones, committing three double faults and claiming just three of the 10 points on them.
Fish and Dancevic exchanged breaks of serve in the second set and equalised the score at 6-6, forcing a tie-breaker. The American completely dominated after that, allowing Dancevic to win just one point and bagging it 7-6(1).
The Los Angeles, California resident smacked four aces and hit one double fault. The right-hander had a low first serve percentage but an impressive conversion rate, winning an amazing 13 of the 14 points on them. Fish was unable
to save the one break threat he came across but balanced by availing one of the two chances he got in the second set. The American required an hour and 22 minutes to undo Dancevic.
However, the top American was unhappy that his match was not scheduled at the stadium court. He said, “It was the same thing at Indian Wells; I didn’t play on the stadium court, and also at the U.S. Open either. It shouldn’t matter,
but I want to play the big matches on the big courts. I’ve worked very hard to put myself where I am: in the top 10, the top American in an American event — two American events — and I haven’t played on stadium court. I don’t want to play on the grandstand.
I want to play on the stadium.”
The 6ft 2in tall added, “I’ve worked very, very hard to put myself in the position I’m in right now, in the top 10 for a year and the No. 1 American for a year.”
Fish is drawn to play Kevin Anderson of South Africa in the third round. Anderson defeated American Sam Querrey in the previous match.
