Mardy Fish to make debut appearance at 2011 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals – Tennis News
World No.9, Mardy Fish, had a terrific season this year that helped him seal the eighth and final spot at Barclays ATP World Tour Finals contested in O2 Arena, London this month. The tournament will be contested amongst top eight elite singles and doubles players from November 22-27. Fish will join in seven extremely talented tennis icons including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych.
The American player has enjoyed an emphatic year that clinched him one title and several quarterfinal or more appearances in elite ATP tournaments. He started the year’s proceedings with Brisbane tournament but lost in the second round. Same happened in Australian Open but in Memphis he reached the semi-finals and showed some exciting stroke play throughout the tournament.
Delray Beach was a successful tour for the American as he reached the semi-finals though Indian Wells was a very disappointing affair he lost in the round of 64. Miami was his best tour considering his outclass performance but Djokovic stood firm in his way and smashed him in the semi-finals that shattered his title dreams. Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros tours left his fans dejected as they were deprived of some outclass show from their tennis icon. Rafael Nadal hammered him in the quarter-final of Wimbledon and another opportunity to win maiden title in 2011 was lost with this defeat.
At-last it was outdoor hard-courts of Atlanta that clinched him his maiden title of the year. He defeated compatriot John Isner in the final and was crowned champion after an enthralling three-set battle. He continued his prolific form in Los Angeles as well but lost in the finals to inferior ranked Ernests Gulbis. It was a major upset and he could have easily doubled his title tally with this triumph.
He came very close to clinch 1000 points and ATP World Tour Masters Canada title but Novak Djokovic again overpowered him in a absolute three-set thriller encounter. Cincinnati was another successful campaign and he marched into the finals but lost to Tsonga. He could only make it to last 16 in the US Open and was knocked-out in the semi-final in Tokyo.
Poor performance in Shanghai and an unfortunate retirement due to injury in Basel forced him out of these two competitions but another opportunity is ticking around the corner. If he can extract his prolific form then maybe he could make it far in his debut appearance at Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
