Mardy Fish trashes Janko Tipsarevic; cruises into final round – Rogers Cup 2011
America’s number one, Mardy Fish eased past Serb Janko Tipsarevic in straight sets at the Rogers Cup 2011, an ATP Masters 1000 event held at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada. He registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the 27-year-old
Serb to book a final spot on Saturday.
Ranked 8th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, Fish maintained his winning composure to dump the Serb, ranked 16 places below him, in straight sets on their fifth meeting. It took the American one hour
and sixteen minutes to overpower Tipsarevic and by doing so he not only reached his third successive final but also extended lead in the head-to-head series by 4-1 against the Serb.
The sixth seeded American stormed into the opening set and reeled off first three games in a row due to quick forehands and backhands from his box of tricks. Fish maintained consistency in his game and bagged in remaining serves
to seal the opener by winning six games to three.
Fish carried his winning ways in the final set and earned the desiderated break in the very first game to make quick in-roads. Despite losing his track in the fourth game, he broke Serb’s serve again in the seventh game to eventually
clinch the set with a 6-4 win.
On the whole, the American outclassed Tipsarevic in every department of tennis. He manifested a slightly higher first serve share of 62 percent and registered a fabulous 85 percent win on it. Although he failed to ward off the
only breakpoint faced but he capitalised on three out of four breakpoint chances to his advantage to earn the glory. Fish then put a cherry on the match by smacking six ferocious aces.
"Overall obviously extremely pleased with the way I played," said Fish after the match. "It felt like I had the upper hand for most of the match. Minus that just small hiccup there (in the second set), I think I played very well."
29-year-old Fish will square off against the world number one, Serb Novak Djokovic.
"It's important when you play a player like Mardy to hold your composure, to be patient and wait, wait for the chance on his service games, try to have high percentage of the first serves and stay aggressive," Djokovic said about
the American.
The Serb number one earned a 6-4, 3-0 retirement victory against French Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who was forced to retire due to a right arm injury. Djokovic faced zero breakpoint and converted two out of five breakpoint opportunities
to his advantage to have the upper hand.
