Mardy Fish will compete against Tommy Haas in the semi-finals – Citi Open 2012
Top seeded Mardy Fish will be playing in the semi-final of Citi Open this weekend against the German tennis ace, Tommay Haas. The US tennis icon defeated Belgian Xavier Malisse at the joint in the clash of the two veterans,
beating him in straight set victory of 6-3, 6-4 on Friday afternoon.
Fish returned to the Games after he improved from a heart repair through a medical surgery, as he was suffering from asymmetrical beating. This was one of the primary reasons, as to why he could not contest for the Olympics
this year.
The former world number 7 will play against the fourth seeded German, Haas, in the semi-final brawl of the hard court tournament. The two sportsmen are “good friends” and often join each other for friendly practicing sessions.
The 34-year-old German belted his compatriot, Tobias Kamke in a straight set match, 6-1, 6-2, taking 66 minutes and qualified for the semi-finals.
In a press conference, Fish told the media, “this is a guy that's trying to take my lunch away tomorrow, and I'm going to try to beat him any way I can. We will remain friends off the court. He seems to be pretty close to
back to 100 percent with his health and hitting the ball as well as I've seen him hit it in a long time.”
The American tennis ace reached the semi-finals for the first time after seven months. On the contrary, his fellow competitor, Haas will be playing his seventh Citi Open and had previously, competed in the semi-finals in
2008 edition of the event. There is a greater chance for the German veteran to win the match as he sustains a head-to-head lead of 3-1 against Fish.
The American further told the media, “This is a nice first for me in Washington. It is good to go further than normal. I am very comfortable here and the fast court suits my game. I also appreciate the hot weather.”
Fish is labouring extremely hard to regain his lost glory and his experience is surely working for his advantage this season. He is hopeful that the match will be a tough one indeed. He is in a good run of form after a very
long time and aims to achieve good results.
Nonetheless, the German veteran has tremendously improved his performance, moving from top-200 to the number 36th spot in the ATP Rankings. Now he is very optimistic about his success and eyes on this 14th career
title through this tournament.
