Margarito shows audacity by snapping back at Commission
Pop open the champagne bottles, Antonio Margarito is back in town.
The boxing bad boy was relicensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations yesterday, after being banned for padding his hand wraps in a January bout with Shane Mosley.
Because of the Texas approval, Margarito can now focus on training for a Nov. 13 bout with superstar champion Manny Pacquiao that will take place at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.
Riding the high wave of celebration, Margarito apparently felt it prudent to begin speaking about the whirl of events surrounding him of late. He said today that he wanted to prove he never loaded his gloves for any fights before Mosley, and that he’ll demonstrate such a thing in the ring itself.
Proponents against Margo’s license renewal are going to love this: Margarito also scorned the commissions that rejected him as treating him unfairly. Shock and awe—the audacity!
"It was unfair what they [the commission of California] did to me, I had to appear before them when their minds were already been made up,” he complained. “But now I'm happy because now I have the fight with Pacquiao in my hands and because I have the opportunity to show that I am a clean fighter. I will beat Pacquiao.”
Margarito is an underdog going into the fight, but can you imagine what it would mean if he was able to beat Pacquiao, even stop him like he did Miguel Cotto? The boxing world would be in a complete frenzy. Gone would be any prospects of a Mayweather-Pacquiao bout, if they ever existed in the first place. And a guy who arguably participated in boxing’s biggest offense would be at the top of most pound-for-pound lists.
"I thank Texas for giving me the license, for believing or me,” Margarito added. “I'm going to prove that I don't need anything that is forbidden to win my battles or past fights, including Miguel Cotto. But again I'll tell them, that when the date arrives I am going to show them that I have what it takes to win. It is a hard fight, but I am going to win him."
Might want to work on that English a little bit too, Margo.
