Maria Hjorth says her caddy husband helped her record the last LPGA triumph
Maria Hjorth has said that she is proud of her caddy husband who helped her win the Avnet LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Classic held in May 2011.
Swedish Hjorth has been seeking to record her 6th LPGA victory since she hoisted a trophy at the Avnet Classic, but is keen to point out that she could not have won the event if her husband had not encouraged her to fight back on the course.
“My husband was really on me,'' Hjorth recalled. "He was telling me the whole time that to win golf tournaments you don't have to play 100 percent".
"He said other people are making mistakes and you're going to make mistakes but as long as you limit the mistakes, knowing that 100 percent is not necessary, you can go out there and relax," she said.
Speaking to the media during one of her recent interviews, Hjorth recounted the scene of the toughest battle of her LPGA career at Magnolia Grove’s Crossings Course.
She said that she was feeling a little under pressure at one stage, and her husband, who was caddying for her at that time, came out to put an end to her worry.
"That helped me to relax more and not worry too much if I made a bogey or something. I felt that I could come back from something like that and still make birdies,'' Hjorth said.
The Swedish star said that the course was good, as it did not offer much challenge, but pointed out that the field featured fearsome players.
She said that she came close to giving others players room to surge ahead. Hjorth said when her husband told her how to face her rivals and make sensible putts on holes, she paid attention to what he said.
The experienced golfer was given a tough time by rookie Lexi Thompson, but carding a 5-under 67 in the final round proved a game changer.
Analysts said that it was Hjorth’s experience that beat the young talented player, who came close to becoming the youngest winner on the LPGA.
Hjorth said that she is training hard and her biggest aim this year is to record another impressive triumph.
