Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez can win the French Open
Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez is on her way to possibly win the French Open. In the recently concluded Italian Open, Martinez Sanchez convincingly defeated tournament favorite Jelana Jankovic. The win in the Italian open is the biggest win in Martinez Sanchez’ 2010 season as it boosts her bid for the French Open in Paris.
Martinez Sanchez’ win at the Italian Open caused one of the year’s biggest surprise as the Spaniard won against world number seven Jelana Jankovic in a well fought 7-6, 7-5 match. Martinez Sanchez is obviously thrilled about her win and according to a recent interview, she says that the idea of winning the pre-French Open tournament has not yet sunk in. there are so many emotions that are running through her head that it may take her some time before the idea of the title win sinks in her head.
Martinez Sanchez’ win over Jelena Jankovic has shocked audiences all over and even Jelena herself. Jankovic was obviously surprised with how Martinez Sanchez played her game; how her style was so unorthodox. Jankovic was the one favored to win the match as she eliminated Serena and Venus Williams that week, however, at the latter part of the first set, Jankovic was the one seen coming back from a 4-1score and forcing a tiebreak before eventually losing the set. The Serb, who is highly favored to reach the semifinals at this year’s French Open, was forced to recover from the breaks in the second set, however Martinez Sanchez was just too much for her.
Despite being ranked at the bottom of the top thirty players in the world, 26th to be exact, Martinez Sanchez showed courage and played with précis drop shots and forays to the net that often brings great results in the clay-courts. After the match, Jankovic attributed Martinez Sanchez’ win to her unorthodox ways; she said that Martinez Sanchez plays differently than most girls. She drops a lot of shots and likes to serve and volley. Jankovic also admits that she had a hard time coping with Martinez Sanchez as all her shots are tricky. Most of all, Martinez Sanchez is left-handed that affects how another players adjusts to her game.
In Maria’s previous matches, it was obvious how she used the same approach she used on Jankovic. She used baseline battles on the clay-court and successfully defeated former world number one Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki on her way to the finals of the Italian open. With a strategy like this employed by Martinez Sanchez, Jankovic has no other choice but to scramble for the dropped shots and baseline shots.
Martinez Jose Martinez Sanchez is on her way to the French Open and with a win like this in the Italian Open, she may have a fighting chance against the front runners of the French Open, which will open on May 23rd of this year. This year’s French Open is clearly dominated by the likes of Justine Henin, Venus Williams and Jelena Jankovic and with a win against Jelena Jankovic in the Italian Open, Martinez Sanchez’ chances of winning a grand slam title have definitely increased.
Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez is definitely expected to finish well into the quarter finals of the French Open. Although she won against Jelena Jankovic in the finals of the Italian Open she may have a hard time making the same finish in the French Open. Justine Henin has won that same competition four times in the last decade and after coming back from retirement, Justine Henin is poised to take the crown at this year’s French Open.
