Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez ousts Andrea Gamiz in qualifiers – Internationaux de Strasbourg 2012
Top seed qualifier, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, stomped over the Venezuelan contestant, Andrea Gamiz, in straight sets at the Internationaux de Strasbourg 2012 on Sunday. She clobbered a 6-3, 6-3 victory against the 19-year-old to secure a place in the
final round of the qualifying competition at this clay court event held in Strasbourg, France.
The Spanish veteran showed brilliant tennis to outrun Gamiz in their first meeting. After ruling the one hour and 39 minutes battle, Martinez Sanchez convincingly advanced into the final round of the qualifiers.
Martinez Sanchez assertively entered this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event and held her opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. After the teenager held her serve in the fifth game, the Spaniard wiped out the last four games in a row
and bagged the opener with a 6-3 win.
Ranked 47th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Martinez Sanchez lost her track towards the proceeding set and after suffering the first blow in the third game, she fell at 1-3. However, the Spaniard brought her experience into handy and went on a five
game tear, eventually pulling out the set with a 6-3 score line.
Summing up the Spanish veteran’s performance in this battle, the 29-year-old manifested a better first serve share of 67 per cent as compared to Gamiz’s 59 per cent and amazingly clicked 28 out of 38 points on it. She also sought 11 break opportunities and
committed fewer double faults.
Up next for Martinez Sanchez is the eighth seed, Mirjana Lucic, who rallied past the local wild card entrant, Myrtille Georges, in three sets to set-up this meeting. The Croat dusted away four out of nine breakpoints she faced and capitalised on five out
of 17 break opportunities to sum up a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 success.
The qualifying third seed, Mandy Minella, will join the Spaniard in the final qualifying round. She was broken seven times but cashed in 10 out of 18 break chances, subsequently formulating a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 score line in two hours and 23 minutes. The Luxembourgian
star produced a slightly lower first serve share but brilliantly availed 31 out of 55 points on it.
