Maria Jose Sanchez dusts off Julia Goerges in quarterfinal – Hansol Korea Open 2011
Sixth seeded Espanola Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez moved into the semi-final round of the 2011 Hansol Korea Open after doing away with third seeded German Julia Goerges in the quarterfinal. Taking close to one hour and fifty minutes, the Espanola secured a straight, yet tad difficult, 7-6(6), 6-1 sets victory over the big hitting German.
Espanola won the pitch and opted to serve first in the opening set. The scoreboard moved on level terms as Goerges followed closely at her heels to match a blow for a blow. Standing at three games each, Sanchez then capitalised off Goerges‘ double fault to break her opponent and go one up in the score.
However, the German was determined to stay in the fight as she snatched back the break in the very next game to bring the score to even terms. From there on, the two continued to hold onto their serves as they forced the set into a tiebreaker.
The neck-to-neck run between the Espanola and the German continued on into the tiebreaker. The players switched service breaks one after the other and after twelve points the score was tied at six points each. However, Goerges spooled off two points to clinch the tiebreaker 8-6 and had taken the competitive edge over her rival.
Commencing the second set was Goerges and she managed to barely hold her serve in the first game. Sanchez was much more confident and bagged an easy game against Goerges to equalize the score at 1-1.
After the first two games Sanchez shifted gears and took a notch higher in her performance as she not only won on her serve but also on her opponent’s serve. Number sixth seeded Sanchez, was quick to capitalize on three break points in the following five games and reeled off a speedy breadstick victory against her German opponent.
Although, it was a close call between both the players in the opening set, in the second it seemed as if Goerges had accepted her defeat before even trying. Nevertheless, Sanchez wrapped up the match by capitalizing on six out of twelve break points and by accomplishing a total of fourteen more points than Goerges in the match.
The sixth seeded Espanola will now be facing unseeded Czech Klara Zakopalova in the semi-final match later in the event.
