Maria Kirilenko ousts Rebecca Marino in the 1st round – Mercury Open 2011
Tuesday was the continuation of the first round of the Mercury Open 2011. Both the players were meeting for the first time at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Carlsbad, California. Maria Kirilenko outplayed Rebecca Marino in straight
sets of 6-3, 6-2.
During the first set of the match Marino struck four double faults (all hit the net) and aced once. Her total set score was fifty eight percent along with an extremely poor return she was able to achieve only thirteen percent of
her total return points. She lost most of her points because of a staggering defence and was unable to win any break points to her advantages.
Whereas, Kirilenko had a powerful serve that smashed two aces and struck zero double faults. She won a grand eighty seven percent of her total serve points along with a strong return she managed to attain forty two percent of her
total return points.
Her defence was as strong as an ox and she did not allow a single break point opportunity to her opponent instead she managed to convert the only break point to her advantage.
Kirilenko was a stronger player and won the set with ten more points than her opponents.
The second set did not see a change of events instead this time Marino had plummeted further into the abyss. Although she struck fewer double faults and saved a larger percent of her break points, she was unable to compete with

Across the board; Marino had fifty two percent of total serve points along with a pathetic twenty four percent of her total return points. While Kirilenko had a strong defence and an attack, winning seventy six percent of her total
serve points along with, forty eight percent of her total return points. She won the set because she did not allow her opponent a single break point and instead was able to break her opponent twice.
When all was said and done, Kirilenko won the set with ten points more than her opponents.
Born on the 25th of January 1987 Maria Kirilenko reached her career high singles ranking of 18 on the 7th of July 2008. This year her she has won thirteen matches out of the twenty seven played and lost only
fourteen and has bagged USD 631,940/- in prize money. She won her first WTA Tour title by defeating Anna-Lena Gronefeld in the Chinese Open. The Russian has reached one Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open in 2010.
