  1. Yes and no.  She was a medical doctor who studied and specialized in ways people learn.  She wasn't a formally trained teacher.

Edit:  Pandaschool's answer about the tests does not make sense and is not correct.  It does not even really relate to your question.

  2. Publicized in America as "an educaitonal wonder worker," Dr. Montessori had revolutionized the notion of early education throught the establishment of "Children's House" in the Roman slums in 1907. She worked with children from the age of tow and 1/2, at a time when American educators were discussing the relevance of her ideas for the four and five year olds in public school kindergartens.

  3. I think she studied psychiatry maybe? I know about her theories, but not so much about her life. More just how its influenced the curriculum we teach.

  4. no and kids who go to the Montessori schools have to take extra test to graduate from school. If they stay with it through their senior year. Kids who go into regular school earlier also have to take specail test. it is not worth it for anyone. Let your child either go to public school or a private school that fools the state regs.

If you don't believe me about this call your school board.

  5. Dr. Montessori's primary qualification was in medicine. Her interest in education was sparked through her medical work with mentally deficient children. Her interventions made it possible for those unfortunate children to do as well as normal children. This led Montessori to study educational methods for normal children more closely.

When given the opportunity, she adapted the methods she had used with the mentally deficient to use with younger normal children. As a medical doctor she applied science to her educational observations. Through careful and thorough  studies of the activities the children did in a prepared environment she was able to continue to adapt materials and methods to meet the needs of the children.

This was a radical departure from the regular approach to education of making children fit preconceived ideas of educational theory.

So, while Dr. Montessori did not have a degree in education, she studied her subject in depth and applied scientific principles to a field that was previously based on applying theory without observational justification.
