Maria Sanchez/ Anabel Garrigues advance in Women’s Doubles at Internazionali BNL D’Italia
Eight seeded Spaniards Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Anabel Medina Garrigues downed the Chinese Taipei pair of Su-wei Hsieh and Zi Yan in straight sets on Tuesday. They registered a 6-4, 6-2 victory over their unseeded rivals
to advance into the second round of the 2011 Internazionali BNL D’Italia, a clay court tournament held in Rome, Italy.
The Spaniards broke the Chinese Taipei tandem’s serve in the very first game. They kept their savage mode on as they reeled off first four games in a row. Sanchez and Garrigues then lost their way as they lost their serve twice
but they broke Chinese – Taipei pair’s serve again to clinch the set with a 6-4 win.
The Spanish duo carried their winning ways into the final set and held their opening serve spectacularly. With their amazing co-ordination, they found the coveted break in the third game and took the lead by 2-1. Despite losing
their serve in the very next game, Sanchez and Garrigues then unleashed blistering ground strokes to win next four games in a row and sealed the set by an assuring 6-2 score line
They produced slightly lower first serve share of 72 percent as compared to their opponents’ 76 percent and registered an impressive 61 percent win on it. The Spaniards saved three out of six breakpoints faced and converted six
out of fifteen breakpoint opportunities to their advantage.
Hseih and Yan on the other side of net fought back well but the more double faults and unforced errors made the difference. Their co-ordination level was also poor and despite breaking seeds’ serve three times, they saved only
nine out of fifteen breakpoint faced.
The Spanish team will next face the winner of the match between the Russian team of Alisa Kleybanova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and the Italian Slovene pair of Alberta Brianti and Polona Hercog.
Seventh seeds will also be joining the Spaniards in the second round. Czechs, Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova trashed Spanish team of Nuria Llagostera Vives and Arantxa Parra Santonja in just under one hour earlier
that day. The seeded Czechs converted four out of six breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to clinch the match with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 score line.
Up next for the Czechs is the Russian Australian pair of Nadia Petrova and Anastasia Rodionova.
