Maria Sharapova, “I don’t want to hear about tennis for the next few weeks” – Tennis News
Reigning French Open Champion, Maria Sharapova, is tired of playing and conducting tennis related press conferences. Sharapova commented, “I played well, but I don’t want to hear about tennis for the next few weeks.”
She has done emphatically well in the current season after coming from a career threatening injury layoff. She stated off in a flying fashion at the Australian Open; reached the grand finale at Melbourne and almost captured the
number one spot on her comeback but was stopped in her footings by the in-form Belarusian tennis icon, Victoria Azarenka.
The 25-year-old Russian lost cheaply in the Open GDF Suez at Paris but bounced back in a terrific fashion to reach the final of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. Once again, the 23-year-old Azarenka denied the second ranked
Russian from winning a maiden title of the season. The trip of Miami was extremely pleasant as well. She reached the final but couldn’t solve the puzzle of Agnieszka Radwanska and lost another chance of claiming a title.
Finally, the Russian superstar stepped in Stuttgart and conquered it on her debut appearance. She ousted Azarenka in the final and clinched the first trophy of her comeback season. She was forced out in the quarter-final of the
Madrid Open by the American number one, Serena Williams. However, the Russian came back strong to retain the Italian Open title in Rome.
The emphatic form was carried to the Roland Garros French Open title and the Russian blonde conquered Paris on her second trip of the season. She captured the missing Grand Slam title and completed the Career Slam; also dethroned
Azarenka from the number one spot and became the best player in the world once again. However, the visit to the top spot was short lived as the Russian lost cheaply in the Wimbledon Champions; fourth round exit at the hands of Sabine Lisicki.
Sharapova returned to the All England Lawn Tennis Club for the Olympics; reached the grand finale but lost again to Williams. In the US Open, Sharapova lost Azarenka in the semis. Samantha Stosur of Australia registered an upset
against the Russian superstar in the quarter-final of Toray Pan Pacific Open. Azarenka, for the fourth time in the season, stood in between the path of Sharapova and title during the China Open grand finale.
Although Sharapova defeated Azarenka in the WTA Championships semi-final but Williams didn’t allow her a title this time around. However, after winning so many matches, Sharapova wants to enjoy the holidays and stay away from any
kind of tennis related talk or practice until the start of the new season in 2013.
