Maria Sharapova, “I was waiting for that moment since I was a little girl" – Tennis News
World number three, Maria Sharapova, was the flag bearer for Russia in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics on the night of Friday. She was ecstatic to be the part of that ceremony and it fulfilled her dream of being the
leading character from her nation at the world’s biggest sporting event.
Sharapova commented about her experience of being a flag-bearer for her country at the opening ceremony of London Games with following words “It was extraordinary. I got there quite a few hours before, because I wanted to walk
around the Olympic Village, as it was my first time. It was like an athlete's little world. I don't know how to explain it. Even though you don't know the person, you feel like you can relate to them and to what they do, how their life is, all the work and
dedication they put into their sports.”
She further said, “I was waiting for that moment since I was a little girl."
In the opening clash of the London Games, the third seed Sharapova faced the Israeli number one, Shahar Peer, on the eve of Sunday. She commenced the gold medal campaign in a devastating fashion; slaughtering the 49th
ranked Israeli star in straight sets 6-2 6-0 in just over an hour. It is such a start that the Russian superstar needed after being stunned by the inferior ranked German, Sabine Lisicki, at the same place about a month ago in the fourth round of the Wimbledon
Championships.
She looked fabulous in that red dress and her scintillating looks changed the whole look of the All England Lawn Tennis Club. It’s the first times athletes are wearing colourful outfits at London; otherwise they are suppose to
wear a dull white dress that kills the glamour of the play to say the least. Shining attires on green grass completely changed the whole look of the courts and spectators seemed more interested than they are during the Wimbledon Championships encounters.
Next up for the Russian superstar will either be the 25-year-old Czech starlet, Lucie Safarova, or the 18-year-old Briton, Laura Robson, who will be having a massive crowd support during her clash against the 23rd ranked
Czech on Monday. They were scheduled to play on Sunday as well but the rain suspended play and now they will be seen in action on the eve of Monday.
Robson, ranked 96, will look to defy all the odds and pull up an upset to provide some glory the home fans.
