Maria Sharapova, the showstopper, pounds Jamie Hampton in round two – Australian Open 2012
World number four, Maria Sharapova, rocked the show at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne by putting her tennis skills into play against the American, Jamie Hampton. Sharapova nailed down her opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, during
the second round contest in the Australian Open and sits comfortably amongst the last 32 players in the year’s first Grand Slam tournament.
Both players were squaring off for the first time in their professional career and Sharapova showed her opponent, one of the worst nightmares of her life; spared just a single game for Hampton, who was a mere spectator throughout
the match. Hampton only witnessed the ball sailing past her but could do nothing about it, as the placement of the former world number one was spot on. It looked like viewers were pulled back to those golden days of Sharapova when she was rocking the show,
leading the rankings and delighting the crowd with her trickery and fashion sense.
Russian slender-legged diva kicked-off the proceedings with a successful serve break and doubled her lead in the next game. Sharapova broke serve once again to take 3-0 lead; two successive aces helped her bag another serve game.
It was getting pretty ominous for the American as she was a no match for the beauty queen of Russia.
Some ticket holders were still moving into the arena and Sharapova had already gathered the massive 4-0 lead in the match; such was the level of domination at the courts from the Russian superstar. She smashed three successive
winners down the line, coupled with one brilliant guided drop shot in the fifth game that helped her pocket the third consecutive breakthrough in the match. With some more delightful and thumping rallies in the next game, Sharapova bagged the first set and
sent a strong message to her upcoming opponents that she was out there and meant business.
Starting the second set in same fashion, Russian beauty broke serve and held her serve to take 2-0 lead. Sparing just one game for her opponent, Sharapova bagged two more breakthroughs that were good enough to seal her the place
in the third round of the contest.
