Maria Sharapova: “I come from a very normal, average family” – Tennis News
Former world number one, Maria Sharapova, might be the most successful player in the world of tennis winning a barrage of prize money every year. However, the inside child of the Russian blonde is still an honest, humble and down
to earth. She didn’t enjoy the luxuries of a high-class lifestyle during her childhood. It is always difficult to grow up in such an environment that doesn’t allow you to afford expenses of practicing tennis but Sharapova’s family didn’t take a single step
back and always helped her in every frontier; sent her to Florida in the early age despite hefty costs related to that decision. It was something that was incredible in the upbringing of the second ranked Russian.
In an interview to the media representatives, Sharapova said, “I come from a very normal, average family. In fact my mother was still a student when she gave birth to me. My father had to look for so many jobs and we kept moving
(from one city to another). We have seen hard times and looking back, tennis wasn’t such a big sport at that time. At the end of the day, I am glad that my family was never afraid to support me. They saw a fire in my eyes; one day hopefully I become the number
1 in the world. And I consider myself very lucky that they carried the belief.”
Mostly players face immense resistance from the parents when they decide to chose a sport as a profession. Parents want their children to concentrate on the studies more than the sport and that causes a huge conflict of ideas which
leaves a kid in no man’s land and destroys his career but Sharapova was blessed with very hardworking and supported her decision of playing tennis despite so many financial problems.
The faith of her parents was paid by her in emphatic fashion. She became the Wimbledon Champion at the age of 17 and continued to pile up titles every year; won US Open in 2006 and Australian Open in 2008. After a gap of four years,
Sharapova clinched the French Open in the current season and almost completed a Career Gold Slam before the 15-Grand Slam Champion, Serena Williams, halted her in the final and forced her to end up with a silver medal.
Sharapova might be the richest than most of the population on globe but the childhood attribute of being humble is still enriched in her.
