Maria Sharapova: “It was a big decision for my parents to move to US” – Tennis News
World number two, Maria Sharapova, was groomed in the academy of Florida, USA. She is a Russian native but her parents were so eager to fulfil the dream of their child so they relocated themselves to Florida to help Sharapova brush
up her tennis skills at a professional environment. The 25-year-old Russian hasn’t broken the faith of her parents and reached the heights of tennis in her career which still looks pretty bright at the moment.
However, the decision of moving to Florida with a very weak financial condition was a bold one from her parents. She confessed that anything in her life will never payback such a big decision of her parents that helped her to get
where she is. It is always difficult to relocate so far from the native country just to make sure that their kid receives the best attention deserved. No output is guaranteed yet Sharapova’s parents took the blind shot.
Sharapova stated in an interview, “I come from a very normal, average family. In fact my mother was still a student when she gave birth to me. My father had to look for so many jobs and we kept moving (from one city to another).
It was a big decision for them to move to the US and they were never afraid to give me what I needed. It helped me at every step of the way what I am today.”
Now, Sharapova has reached the heights in the field of tennis but still has to unlock two major thresholds that are holding her back especially damaged her cause in the current season and these are the likes of reigning world number
one, Victoria Azarenka, and the 15-time Grand Slam Champion, Serena Williams. In the last tournament (WTA Championships) of the season at Istanbul, the Russian blonde managed to sweep away the resistance put forth by the 23-year-old Belarusian in the semi-final
but couldn’t solve the puzzle of Williams who ended the season with seven titles including two Grand Slams, Wimbledon and US Open.
Commenting about Williams, Sharapova said, “Serena is an incredible athlete. It is great to have rivalries in sport as it makes the competition better. You try to keep working hard and change the result in future.” The year 2013
will definitely bring some mind-startling moments starting form the first month at Melbourne where the Australian Open Championships will take place. Let’s hope the Top-trio enriches their rivalry and brings more entertainment to us.
