Maria Sharapova: Olympics is something I've been looking forward to for a long time – Tennis News
Russian tennis icon, Maria Sharapova, has sets her sight at the Olympics gold medal and wants to raise her game to the next level where she is totally devastating. She is just 24-years-old but her career highlights are such
a perfect episode of a successful tennis career that can be utilized as a coaching material in academies. She has enjoyed the flare of number one spot in the world rankings, coupled with three major Grand Slam titles including Wimbledon 2004, the US Open 2006
and the Australian Open 2008.
World number three was interviewed about her Olympics goal and she proclaimed, “Personally (the Olympic Games are) something I've been looking forward towards for a long time, and that's a big goal of mine. To have a long
grass season will be really fun. This year is a big year for me because I'll be playing in the Olympics, which has been a dream of mine since I was a young girl. Growing up in Russia, tennis wasn't a big sport back then. It was all about being an Olympian,
especially the winter sports. Fortunately we've been able to change that a little bit and tennis has become extremely popular back in Russia.”
She flabbergasted the world at the age of 17 when she ousted the two time defending champion, Serena Williams, in the finals of the Wimbledon and broke into the Top-10 rankings of the world. She won the US Open title by trouncing
the then ranked world number one, Amelie Mauresmo, in the finals. Her third major title victory came in the Australian Open 2008 when she defeated the Serb beauty queen, Ana Ivanovic. This year she was very close on winning the second Australian Open title
but failed to deliver in the finals against the Belarusian tennis ace, Victoria Azarenka; lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
The slender-legged Russian is leading her country’s Fed Cup team that will play against the Spanish squad on February 10th. She needs to back herself up after such a major injury-layoff; her performance was blistering
in the Australian Open except the formidable final. She needs to build upon that performance and delight her fans who have been waiting to the Russian diva in sublime form for quite some time.
She looks threatening and her remarkable comeback is the prove of it; if she can gobble up some titles to her tally she will definitely feel more accomplished before the start of the Olympics, to be contested in summer this
year in London.
