Maria Sharapova all set to be crowned champion for the second time in Indian Wells – Tennis News
World number two, Maria Sharapova, is all set to take her shrieks at the hard courts of California to contest in the PNB Paribas Open. The qualifiers have just ended and the main round matches will start on Wednesday but the former
world number one has a Bye in the first round so her grunts will be heard a day after most probably.
In an interview about her form in the recent past, she stated, “I've never really been the type to compare what it is before to what it is now. It's very different because you're at different stages of your career and your life
and it's tough to always look back and think that whatever maybe was good or was not good will be the same today because the game has evolved, you're a different player, you're a different person and things change.”
Sharapova came back to the courts in the year’s first Grand Slam of the tournament, the Australian Open, after a long injury lay-off. She unexpectedly cruised her way into the final of the tournament, dropping just a couple of
sets on her way but wasn’t able to crush the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, to bag her second major title in Melbourne. She won the Australian Open title in 2008.
She is definitely the most breathtaking character at the court and spectators love to watch her thunderous cross-court and down the line return shots, coupled with the loud grunts that increase a spice to the play.
The defending champion, Caroline Wozniacki, has a mammoth task on her shoulders. If she manages to defend her title at Indian Wells, it will definitely shut her critics and allow her a lifeline but for that she has to go through
the likes of Sharapova, Azarenka, Stosur, Radwanska and Li Na. These people are the strongest contenders of winning the title at the moment.
Sharapova further added, “I believe that in the last year I have taken a step further in a good direction and that has made me quite happy because for years I have felt like I wasn't really moving forward like I wanted to be.”
She is in with a chance to win a chance to repeat the heroics of 2006 Indian Wells performance when she ousted her compatriot, Elena Dementieva, to take the crown. She is in sublime form and has a gigantic crowd support as well
that will boost her chances of winning a maiden title in 2012.
