Maria Sharapova and Sasha Vujacic to tie the knot
Congratulations are in order, as the Los Angeles Lakers' guard Sasha Vujacic reportedly proposed to girlfriend and tennis star, Maria Sharapova at his house in Manhattan Beach. Apparently, Sharapova has been witnessed bearing an enormous diamond ring, apart
from which, upon being asked to confirm whether Vujacic had actually popped the question and how, the Slovenian stated, “That stays between us. But it was how to say, ‘Old School’ probably. I had to do it like a gentleman. It was good, she was happy. The answer
was ‘yes’ so I think she liked it.”
Vujacic has played six seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers so far. Last week, the professional suffered a concussion during practice and had been side-lined prior to replacing Kobe Bryant in the starting line-up in Santiago.
As for Sharapova, the year 2010 didn't prove as gainful as it possibly could have. Formerly ranked no. 1 in the World, Maria currently has 3 grand slam titles, apart from 22 Women's Tennis Association singles titles and 3 WTA doubles
titles to her name. Sharapova however, proved incapable of making it past the initial few rounds at all four of the major tournaments.
In an all-Russian tussle at the 2010 Australian Open, Maria Kirilenko got through with Sharapova in the first round of the tournament. Seeded no. 14 at the tournament, after going nip and tuck in the first set, Maria was beaten 7-6. However, the Russian came
back to take the second set, 6-3. Nevertheless, the deciding third set went in favour of Kirilenko, as she took it 6-4, to eliminate Sharapova from the championship.
Maria battled it out at the 2010 French Open, defeating compatriot, Ksenia Pervak in the first round and Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens in the second, to face Belgian, Justine Henin in the third round of the tournament. Seeded no.
22, Henin initiated the match with a 6-2 win in the first set. Sharapova responded with a 6-3 win in the second set, however the decider was taken 6-3 by Justine to send Maria home.
Additionally, seeded no. 16 at the 2010 Wimbledon Championship, America's Serena Williams got rid of Sharapova in the fourth round, defeating her 7-6 and 6-4 to advance at the tournament. Furthermore, Williams went on to clinch
the championship title.
The Russian defeated wild card entrant, USA's Beatrice Capra 6-0, 6-0 in the third round of the 2010 U.S. Open to be opposed by Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth round. The brief two set match was brought to a close, just as Wozniacki took the game
based upon her 6-3 and 6-4 straight set win.
Despite the fact that the 2010 tennis season proved disappointing for Sharapova, considering the fact that diamonds are a girl's best friend, the ring on her hand and the fiance on her arm should compensate for all that she has
failed to achieve in terms of her career this year.
