Maria Sharapova bashes Gilles Simon on his remarks against the wage rate for women – Tennis News
World number one, Maria Sharapova, has publicly spoken against the remarks of the French tennis ace, Gilles Simon, about the issue of same pay for both genders in Grand Slams.
Simon stated that the men contest five-setter matches but they are paid the same amount of prize money as women who play three-setters. It is highly unfair to the male players that they contest lengthy matches and put their bodies
on the line just to see a meagre salary that is equivalent to the female players.
This argument was severally disliked by the players of WTA (Women Tennis Association). The Russian superstar stated, “I’m sure there are a few more people that watch my matches than his. We women have fought so long to get equal
prize money. It was a big challenge and nobody really supported us. It’s been a few years since we’ve got that. We’re all really proud of it, and we continue to build the sport and make it bigger, no matter what anyone says, or the criticisms that we get.”
Former world number one, Serena Williams, also backed her arch rival by stating, “Definitely a lot more people are watching Maria than Simon. She’s way hotter than he is. Women’s tennis is really awesome.”
It is highly unlikely that International Tennis Federation will think on this matter because they have already faced a lot of criticism for paying less prize money to women in the past. There is hardly any chance that the claim
of the Frenchman will be entertainment by them. However, the statement has definitely created a great hype about the old talk of wages between men and women tennis.
World number four, Andy Murray, stated that women do have an advantage of playing three-setters and then they can play a doubles match with more stamina. However, it is highly unlikely that a male player be fit to play a gruelling
five-setter and then be ready for his doubles match on the same day. So, the difference is definitely there but he cleared the air that he was not taking anyone’s side; just making a comment.
