Maria Sharapova bows out to Sabine Lisicki in round four – Wimbledon Champions 2012
World number 15, Sabine Lisicki, outclassed the top ranked Russian superstar, Maria Sharapova, in the fourth round of the Wimbledon Champions; picking up straight sets 6-4, 6-3 glory against the top seed contestant at All England
Lawn Tennis Club.
Both contestants commenced the match with a swap of breakthroughs before the German 15th seed held serve to love. Furthermore, she broke serve of the Russian 25-year-old starlet and took a lead of 3-1.
Capitalization on serves pushed the scores to 5-3 before another exchange of breakthroughs wrote a tremendous triumph for the 22-year-old German. It took quarter of an hour for Lisicki to bag the opening set with a total of 34
points.
Sharapova lost the set with a difference of just three points but 11 unforced errors were the leading factor in her downfall. She only managed eight winners and couldn’t generate enough opportunities to break serve; just three
of them compared to five of her rival.
Lisicki kicked off where she left in the opening set rushed away to an early lead of 3-0 courtesy a breakthrough in the second game. The Russian starlet was tested regularly on her serves whilst the German faced no problem at all
except the final game where Sharapova hung on to delay the glorious moment for the German but it had to come eventually.
The Russian managed just 22 points in the second set and dropped out of the tournament pretty early than expected. The German won the second set in just 39 minutes and became the first player to beat the Russian superstar since
three tournaments on the trot.
In a post-match interview, Lisicki said, “I had a good practice yesterday evening and felt good this morning. As soon as I stepped on the court I felt like I was playing very well. Even though I lost the first game and missed a
couple of points here and there, I just felt very good and confident overall. I was feeling very confident."
Sharapova countered the onslaught of questions by stating, “I certainly had my chances and didn't take them, but a lot of the credit goes to my opponent. She played extremely well today and did many things better than I did on
this given day. You just have to hand it to her."
Sabine Lisicki squares off against her compatriot, Angelique Kerber, to find a place in the last four.
