Maria Sharapova breezes past Bojana Jovanovski to advance into 3rd round – Rogers Cup 2011
A former world number one, Russia’s Maria Sharapova trashed Serbian qualifier Bojana Jovanovski with a breadstick at the Rogers Cup 2011, a WTA Premier event held on the hard courts in Toronto, Canada. She earned a 6-1, 7-5 success
over the 19-year-old Serb to book a third round spot on Wednesday.
Fifth seeded Sharapova was 2-4 down in the second set but made a comeback to register a straight set victory over the teenager on their first meeting at the Rexall Centre in Toronto. She is now eyeing for the $2,000,000 Prize Money
and her 24th WTA title.
World number five, Sharapova displayed her 2008 magic in the opening set as she unleashed barrage of massive groundstrokes to reel off first five games in a row before Jovanovski could hold on. The Russian then held her serve in
the seventh game to earn a breadstick.
She clobbered a much better first serve share of 78 percent as compared to Serb’s 64 percent and registered a magnificent 72 percent win on it. In addition to this, the Sharapova faced null breakpoint and cashed in both breakpoint
opportunities to her advantage to earn this assuring 6-1 victory.
24-year-old Russian lost her ways in the final set as she not only gifted away her opening serve but trailed 2-4 after losing her three crucial serves. However, Sharapova bounced back and broke back the youngster’s serve in the
seventh game to lower the trail. She then held her remaining serves after maintaining consistency in her game and converted another breakpoint opportunity in the eleventh game to seal the set by winning seven games to five.
The higher ranked Russian spilled five double faults and several unforced errors but clobbered a much higher first serve share of 70 percent as opposed to Jovanovski’s 48 percent. She further mustered the set by saving four out
of seven breakpoints conceded and by capitalising on four out of five breakpoint chances to her advantage.
"Bojana's on her way up, so I knew it was going to be a dangerous round," the beaming Sharapova said. "I was happy with the way I played in the first set, then I was up and down a little bit in the second. But overall I thought
it was good."
Up next for the Nyagan native is another qualifier, Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva. She upset ninth seeded French Marion Bartoli in her opening round match and bounced back to register a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Italian Flavia Pennetta
in one hour and forty-three minutes in the second round.
