Maria Sharapova bulldozes Sara Errani to win the title – French Open 2012
Russian beauty, Maria Sharapova, captured her maiden French Open title, as she defeated 21st seed, Sara Errani of Italy, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the women’s singles final at the Roland Garros in Paris on Saturday.
Sharapova also entered the history books, as she became just the 10th women in the tennis history to win all four Grand Slams during her career. She had won her first Major eight years back at the age of just 17, when
she stunned title favourite, Serena Williams, of USA in the final of the Wimbledon Championships in 2004.
The Russian had always liked to play on faster courts and never came close to winning the French Open title before in her nine previous appearances in Paris. She gave her best performances in 2007 and 2011, when she reached the
last four.
However, the 6ft 2in tall player started this year’s French Open as one of the favourites, as she captured two clay court events at the Porsche Grand Prix Open and Internazionali BNL d’Italia right before the start of the second
Grand Slam of the season.
Coming back to the final, the 25-year-old was on fire from the start of the match, as she broke Errani’s first two serves, grabbing opening four games and racing to a 4-0 lead. The Italian opened up her account by pulling one back
in the fifth and holding her following serve to reduce the trail to 2-4. However, she could not level the proceedings, as Sharapova succeeded in holding her next two serves and closing the opener 6-3.
In a similar fashion to the first set, the Russian made the ideal start in the second, breaking Errani in the opening game and consolidating on it to move ahead 2-0. Sharapova claimed her second breakthrough in the fifth to build
a 4-1 lead but the Italian hit back immediately, reducing it to 2-4. The Russian did not get upset by that loss and struck once more to take her lead to 5-2. Serving for the championship in the following game, Sharapova kept her nerves under control and finished
it 6-2.
Sharapova had failed to win last year’s Wimbledon and this season’s Australian Open final against Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka respectively but this time she succeeded in grabbing her fourth Grand Slam.
