Maria Sharapova claims double glory at the Roland Garros French Open 2012 – Tennis News
Booming Russian beauty queen, Maria Sharapova, finally completes her Career Slam after winning the coveted Roland Garros French Open title on Saturday. The 25-year-old diva not only claimed the Grand Slam title but also rose to
the world number one spot in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings in Monday’s latest release of ratings.
The Grand Slam campaign in Paris, France, was nothing less than a dream run for Sharapova, who has been labouring extremely hard to reclaim her world number one spot since her return to the WTA professional circuit. The Russian
missed out most of the 2011 season due to persistent injuries and had a thumping return to the tennis courts at the start of the running circuit. She had a couple of opportunities to clinch the top spot in the women’s rankings but luck didn’t go her way. She
was finally blessed at the Roland Garros, when she outplayed the Czech number one, Petra Kvitova, in the semi-final brawl last week.
Sharapova has been the number one player among women for quite some time in the past and getting to the top of the rankings wasn’t a new thing for her. The slender-legged Russian was more desperate to win the French Open title,
the only trophy missing out in her collection to gold. It was the first time that she made it to the final of Roland Garros and she fully availed this priceless opportunity to complete her Career Slam. Sharapova is only the 10th woman tennis professional
to achieve the feat of winning all the four Grand Slam titles in her career, something very unique and speaking highly of her class and talent.
"It's the most incredible feeling. I don't know what to say. I'm so happy. I've worked so hard for this," Sharapova expressed after her memorable triumph in Paris. "It took a lot to get to this stage and even more to win it. There
are so many tough days where you feel like giving up, but you don't. It's been such a journey to get to this stage again. I also wanted to say, if this weren't my fourth Grand Slam title, if this were my only one, it would be just as special as it would be
to win my fourth."
The Russian further said that it is just the beginning of a new voyage and she aims at the upcoming grass-court Grand Slam, the Wimbledon Championships and the all-prestigious Olympic Games gold medal next month.
