Maria Sharapova desire to become a tennis emissary all over the world – Tennis News
Russian diva, Maria Sharapova, rocked the entire tennis world with yet another incomparable achievement this weekend. She had a double treat at her French Open voyage, as the 25-year-old rocketed away to the world number one spot
in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings and also completed her long-awaited Career Slam in Paris.
The Russian is extremely delighted on becoming the 10th women’s in the history of the sport to have all the four Grand Slam titles under her belt. She came to Paris, France, with the intentions of fulfilling her dream
of achieving the Career Slam and fought her way all the way through a star-studded field of top class tennis professionals to attain glory.
Becoming the world number one player, Sharapova believes she has to lead as an example for the upcoming youngsters and promote the sport of tennis to all corners of the world. The Russian beauty queen wants to emulate the women’s
tennis icon, Billie Jean King and her efforts to prop up tennis throughout the world.
“I’m just extremely happy to be back at this stage. It means a lot to me personally,” said the new world number one, Sharapova, “I’ve played the sport for so long and the sport itself means a lot to me, so my goal is to represent
it in the best way possible and to be professional, on and off the court and set a good example, not just for now but a generation that follows after. Like Billie Jean King did. Obviously it’s something that’s always on my mind because I feel like, ultimately
when you retire, what you put in place now, a whole new generation will follow in your footsteps.”
Sharapova was sidelined from the bulk of the last year’s WTA season due to persistent shoulder injury but her return to the professional circuit has been extremely impactful. She earlier had an opportunity to reclaim the top spot
at the Australian Open final but the Belarusian tennis sensation, Victoria Azarenka, outplayed her in the crunch match to clinch the world number one berth. The Russian has been labouring hard since then and finally achieved her goal on the clay-courts of
Paris.
The 25-year-old expressed that she has a couple of weeks to feast on her mammoth triumph before she gets ready for the Wimbledon Championships campaign. Sharapova eyes the grass-court Grand Slam title, as well as the all-prestigious
Olympic Games gold medal to strengthen her position as the world number one.
