Maria Sharapova destroys Andrea Petkovic in the quarterfinals – French Open 2011
Russian diva Maria Sharapova blasted away German Andrea Petkovic in straight sets in their quarterfinal match at the 2011 Roland Garros in Paris, France on Wednesday, 1st June.
The Russian took almost ninety minutes to secure a 6-0, 6-3 victory over the thirteenth seeded German.
Previously leading the head-to-head 2-1 against the German, Sharapova extended here lead to two matches as she moves on ahead to complete her dream run here. A former world number one, Sharapova has three Grand Slams to her name,
one of each, with the exception of a title win here. The only jewel missing from her already well decorated crown, Sharapova has never managed a title win at the Roland Garros.
Opening serve in the opener, Petkovic committed two back-to-back errors after four deuces to give the first game to Sharapova and unknowingly the lead. The inform Russian broke the German one after the other to clinch a breadstick
victory in thirty two minutes in the first set.
Although she served no aces in the first set, Sharapova outshined the German in all other statistics. Hitting eleven winners and capitalising on her opponent’s twenty two unforced errors, Sharapova was able to go one up in the
set score, recording a marvellous 81% win on her first serve.
Continuing her dominance, Sharapova broke the German in the first game of the second set to lead 2-0. Although the German bounced back to level the score at 3-3, this was the last time she found herself on the scoreboard.
Reeling off three straight games, Sharapova was able to win the second set 6-3 and seal her straight sets victory.
With only two wins away from the dream title here, Sharapova next faces Li Na in the semi-finals. The Chinese destroyed fourth seeded Victoria Azarenka to make her way into the semis here earlier in the day.
