Maria Sharapova destroys local Laura Robson in second round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Russian diva, Maria Sharapova shook off a slow start against local Laura Robson as she secured a straight sets victory in her second round matchup at the 2011 Wimbledon Championship in London, England on Friday, 24th
June.
The former world number one took almost two hours as she secured a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory against the local.
In their first meeting ever, Robson won the toss and opted to serve first. Desperately trying to hold her own against the former world number one, Robson took almost twelve minutes in the first game before putting herself on the
scoreboard after six deuces and several rallies. With firmer footing in the second game, Robson hit powerful winners to break the Russian diva and clinch a 2-0 lead, extending it to 3-0 moments later. Trailing 1-4 in the first set, Sharapova reformed herself
as she bounced back and reeled off three straight games to level the score at four games each. A successful hold of serve from the two ladies for the next four games pushed the set into a tiebreaker.
An even footed race followed in the tiebreaker for first eight points before Sharapova darted into the lead forcing an error from Robson and clinching the tiebreaker 7-4.
A slow start for the Russian, but she managed to turn things around. Taking sixty eight minutes, Sharapova hit two aces and fifteen winners with minimal unforced errors. The Russian number two recorded a meagre 67 percent on her
first serve as she went one up in the set score.
Having found her footing, Sharapova got off to a stronger start in the second set as she clinched an early break to secure an early 2-0 lead. Another break later in the fourth game, the Russian was able to extend her lead to 4-1.
An exchange of break later, Sharapova was still leading the set 5-2. A successful hold of serve later from the pair allowed the Russian to clinch a 6-3 win and seal her straight sets victory.
Sharapova moves on ahead to play Czech Klara Zakopalova in the third round. Zakopalova survived a mid-match lapse against compatriot Lucie Safarova as she registered a 6-0, 6-7(3), 6-4 victory to move on ahead at the event.
