Maria Sharapova dislikes the attitude of Victoria Azarenka – Tennis News
World number two, Maria Sharapova, has indirectly hit out on the shocking behaviour of the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka. In an interview, the Russian tennis starlet stated, “She's been injured more than anyone and
still stayed number one. Last year I think she had more injuries than anyone else. Sometimes she'll withdraw and then you'll see her practising two days later.”
She further added, "For me, if I'm injured, then it doesn't matter how much the fine is, I am not going to play. My body and my health are the most important things and if you lose points or have a fine, I don't care about that."
Sharapova missed the bulk of the last season due to a shoulder injury and never appeared in any tournament carrying an injury. However, the Belarusian saved her fine for not participating in Rome and also took a time out from the
professional tennis claiming that she was struggling from a niggling right shoulder injury.
Such behaviour from the top seeds often disgusts the crowd who buy expensive tickets to witness the world class athletes into action. The Russian is having a terrific comeback year so far; having reached four finals of different
tournaments and winning one of them in Stuttgart to get off the mark. She is looking to defend her title in Rome and takes on the German number one, Angelique Kerber, in the semi-final contest on Saturday.
Azarenka, on the other hand, has a different perspective of the situation. She thinks if the rules of the Women Tennis Association were not strict as they are, she would have taken out some time to recover from the injury and never
participated in Rome.
The French Open is just around the corner and no one wants to put their body on the line before the Grand Slam tournament. Everyone wants to be perfectly fit but the attitude of the Belarusian stated that she withdrew from the
tournament on purpose which is something very disappointing.
If Sharapova manages to stick to her title in Rome, she can claim the number one spot in the world by claiming the Grand Slam title in Paris.
