Maria Sharapova eyeing Fed Cup win over Spain – Tennis News
Former world number one, Maria Sharapova, is very confident that her squad will oust the Spanish team in the Fed Cup tie to be played from the 10th to 12th of February. Sharapova
was surrounded by the media officials whilst she was doing her practice at the Olympiisky Sports Complex in Moscow. It’s the same place where the matches will take place for the Russia’s Fed Cup tie with Spain.
Talking to the media members, she stated, “The Spanish team is strong but we're the favourites for the match regardless. Anything can happen in the Fed Cup. A year ago I didn't play very well in the first rubber of our match
with the French, and Svetlana Kuznetsova also lost on the first day. But then Svetlana [Kuznetsova] and Anastasia [Pavlyuchenkova] helped us to get out of a tricky situation the next day. I hope we don't have any difficulties this time.”
It shows that Sharapova is not disheartened by her loss and has already forgotten about the Australian Open grand finale. She is looking ahead for her next targets and preparing well to diminish her shortcomings in order
to give the toughest times to her opponent on courts. The contest will be played on hard courts and coming back from a long injury lay-off, Sharapova will be looking to impress her fans with some more outstanding performances in the Fed Cup.
Newly ranked world number three shocked everyone with her mind-startling comeback to the tennis circuit during the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open. She defeated world class performers and made it to
the grand finale in Melbourne. She faced-off the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the finals. Although, her performance was very dismal during the big match at Rod Laver Arena but her overall performances were terrific. She lost just two sets
coming into the finals of the tournament and pulling out such an enthralling performance after a prolonged injury lay-off is outstanding for any player.
It is going to be a good learning curve for all the Russian players and Sharapova’s teammate, Nadia Petrova, proclaimed that this might be an excellent opportunity to learn about each other’s game style. Other team members
include the 23-years-old, Ekaterina Makarova, who played Sharapova in the quarter-final of the Australian Open and Shamil Tarpishchev, who is the captain of the team. All these members will have to co-ordinate well in order to overpower the strong Spanish
line-up.
