Maria Sharapova eyes Wimbledon glory after eight years – Tennis News
World number one, Maria Sharapova, clinched the Roland Garros French Open title for the first time in her professional career earlier this month and completed her Career Slam. She posed with the French Open trophy at the bank of
River Seine as well as the base of Eiffel Tower.
During the interview and photo session, her thoughts rambled from the glorious moment in the history of her professional career to her goal and that was to cap the stupendous return to the number one spot with a second Wimbledon
title in July.
She won her first ever Grand Slam at Wimbledon way back in 2004 when she was just 17. She ousted the American former world number one, Serena Williams, in the final and stunned the crowd with her emphatic run throughout the tournament.
There has been no decline in her courage and enthusiasm to win major titles since then. She hated the clay courts because her momentum was broken during the rallies due to lack of pace on the returns. However, she moulded her game style for that surface and
was rewarded with the biggest possible title earlier this month.
She commented, “It took a lot of time, it took a lot of bad losses, it took a lot of bad days. It certainly didn’t come easy for me. I felt like I really deserve the French Open win because I worked so hard and I went through so
many tough days to get here. Now I’ll start to think about Wimbledon.” It is always blissful to revive the memories of teenage glories and Sharapova has a chance of doing that at Wimbledon this year. She is 25-year-old now and possibly the strongest contender
for the Wimbledon title after the gap of eight years.
She further added about her previous Wimbledon triumph, “Of course it was reasonable for people to write me off because I was out of the game; I’d just had shoulder surgery. And then, of course, my comeback story wasn’t like I
got back on the court and I won a grand slam.”
Now, Serena and Sharapova have changed places. The American is the one who is the second favourite for the title and Sharapova the hot favourite. In 2004, it was other way round. It is always a happy moment for a player to see
her name on top of the rankings. She is the deserving world number one and has all the capabilities to grab the fifth Grand Slam Championship of her career at Wimbledon 2012.
