Maria Sharapova eyes revenge in the semi-final of the US Open 2012 – US Open 2012
World number three, Maria Sharapova, qualified for the semi-final clash against the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the US Open Championships, after her conquest over the 11th ranked Frenchwoman, Marion
Bartoli, on the eve of Wednesday.
Sharapova is looking to power down the contestant who slammed her in the final of the Australian Open at the start of this season. It is time for revenge mission for the Russian blonde; a stage is set for the former world number
one to slaughter her rival in the Grand Slam Championships and register an emphatic revenge of the first month’s loss.
However, the Belarusian tennis ace is also in sublime run of form and her conquest over the Aussie defending champion, Samantha Stosur, in the quarter-final was clearly a depiction of her talent. So, it will be a terrific match-up
with even-steven odds.
Sharapova commented about the semi-final battle stating “Tough challenge. She beat me in Australia quite easily and I would love to get my revenge at a Grand Slam. It's always tough to lose in that final stage of a Grand Slam.
Last time we played was in Stuttgart where I beat her, but before that she got me a couple times. But that was on clay. This is a different situation.”
Both players will be looking to defy the odds and take early breakthroughs to pile pressure on their rivals. It is a mesmerizing experience to witness such an amazing encounter. Both players have contested for the number one spot
in the current year.
In the final of the Australian Open, Azarenka snapped a win to take the number one spot but the Russian blonde fought back in the French Open; completed her Career Gold Slam as well as rose to the number one ranking. However, the
slight difference of points was overcome by the 23-year-old Belarusian who caressed her way into the semi-finals whilst the 25-year-old Russian blonde fall victim to an upset in the fourth round and hence squandered the number one position to her arch rival.
At the moment, the Belarusian is confirmed of the number one spot despite any outcome of the match. However, it is crucial for the third ranked Russian to close down the gap by winning the match and moreover take a revenge of the
loss. A mouth-watering event is waiting at the centre court of the Flushing Meadows, New York and mammoth crowd is expected.
