Maria Sharapova gusts away Lourdes Dominguez-Lino in round two – US Open 2012
Former world number one, Maria Sharapova, gunned down the 31-year-old Spanish professional, Lourdes Dominguez-Lino, in the second round of the US Open Championship at New York. She thumped a bagel (6-0) in the opening set and fired
in a breadstick (6-1) to end the match in quick succession.
At the end of the match, Sharapova said, "She's someone who likes to have a lot of time, and I didn't want to give that to her. I played my game, stayed aggressive and opened up the court. I'm pretty happy to be in the third round
of the US Open again. There's something special about the night matches in New York, I think because of its history. There's a special feeling about it. But it's great to be out on Arthur Ashe playing tennis whether it's day or night."
There was absolutely no way out for the 78th ranked Spaniard who was brutally put aside by the Russian in the opening set. Sharapova won three breakpoints in a row and allowed her opponent absolutely nothing to be proud
of. She dismantled the confidence of Lino in the second game; thumping two winners to grasp a breakpoint and that was good enough to stamp her authority in the match.
The Russian superstar lost just three points on her serve during the first set and smashed in four aces; coupling them with 20 thunderous winners to compared to none of her rival. She won 13 of the allotted 14 net points and converted
all three of her breakpoints to slide past the Spaniard in the first phase of the match.
Hardly anything changed in the second half of the match for the Spaniard except the consolation serve hold that was sarcastically praised by the mammoth crowd in the Ashes Stadium where the 25-year-old Russian had never lost a
match in her 13 previous encounters.
Two back-to-back breakpoints were good enough for the third ranked Russian superstar who rolled into the third round of the contest without any difficulty at all. To her pleasure, she will be playing a college tennis star, Mallory
Burdette, in the third round which doesn’t seem much of a problem for the in-form Russian.
