Maria Sharapova is the living example of ‘efforts never go in vain’ - Tennis Special
Newly ranked world number one, Maria Sharapova, is registering the best season of her career having played the finals of the both Grand Slam tournaments to date and winning the clay court French Open championship for the first
time in her career to become the sixth ever women of the open era to complete the Career Slam. She trashed the likes of the Italian 21st seed, Sara Errani, in the grand finale of the tournament on Saturday to put her hands of the French open trophy
for the first time in her legendary career.
Russian beauty queen has struggled all her life in the accomplishment of her goals. She travelled to Florida in her childhood, away from her native home just for the sake of tennis. However, her efforts were rewarded at the age
of 17 when she became the youngest player in the world to put her hands on the Grand Slam trophy at Wimbledon; beating the in-form American, Serena Williams, in the final. It was the start of a dream career that has seen so many ups and downs but still managed
to hang on and prove to the world that she is the best player of the era.
Talking about her niggling shoulder and ankle injuries, she said, “I had my doubts [about fully recovering] because I would always ask around, who had such problems and who recovered from it and had surgery and got back to the
top. I didn't get many answers back, which was a little frightening. You speak to the doctors and they're always optimistic, and they want to get you back first. They say, 'this is a small surgery, of course you have to do it or you won't be able to ever compete',
or for me, ever serve again without pain.”
It is not an easy road to victory for superstars as it seems to the general public. They go through rigorous training, career threatening injuries and still manage to pass through each and every hurdle; keeping their heads up to
attain their goals. Sharapova has done that. She faced a terrible injury layoff last season; missing almost all the tournament since August but her willpower to rule the world once again, brought her back into the action.
In her very first comeback tournament this season at Melbourne, she reached the final and was on the verge of becoming the world number one once again but was stopped by the Belarusian tennis ace, Victoria Azarenka. It was a heartbreaking
moment for someone who has been aiming to become number one for a quite long time. However, she didn’t panic and continued to prove her mark and finally after a wait of almost five months, she was rewarded with a triple glory; first time French Open title,
world number one spot and the completion of Career Slam. Efforts are never wasted. They are always rewarded at the right time with maximum glory.
Sharapova has achieved everything now except the Olympics gold medal and she has a chance of winning the missing gold medal later this year when she will enter the Wimbledon arena to contest in Olympics.
