Maria Sharapova is the second player to enter the semi-final of the WTA Championships – Tennis News
Former world number one, Maria Sharapova, dumped the fourth ranked Pole star, Agnieszka Radwanska, in an epic three-setter to book a spot in the semi-final of the WTA Championships in Istanbul. She rallied a set down to win the
contest in three hours and 12 minutes; registering final scores of 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.
The Russian superstar was ecstatic for making it to the last four round of play at Istanbul. Last year, she failed to register a single win in her two scheduled matches and withdrew from the final battle due to an injury. It was
a bitter closure to the season for the 25-year-old Russian but now that she is back in action and hitting the ball from the sweet part of the racquet, she wants to capitalize on that and bag as many wins as she can.
Sharapova proclaimed in a post-match interview, “I'm happy to get to that stage - the goal is always to get out of your group. I was injured last year and didn't play very well, so to be in the semi-finals this year makes me very
proud, and especially given the way I fought tonight.”
She added few more comments stating, “It was a very physical match with so many ups and downs - I wasn't playing my best tennis, but I kept fighting. And when you win when you're not at your best, it gives you extra motivation
to do better in the next one.”
Sharapova will not be seen in action on the eve of Thursday. However, she will return back to the Istanbul tennis arena for her final Round Rubber match that will take place against the ninth ranked Aussie star, Samantha Stosur,
who replaced the ill Czech defending champion, Petra Kvitova. It will be important to see how the Aussie professional takes this opportunity and grinds out a win against the second ranked Russian.
On Day three, the eighth ranked Chinese superstar, Li Na, will take on the fifth seed German, Angelique Kerber. Later in the day, the reigning world number one Victoria Azarenka will take on the US Open Champion Serena Williams
who has already qualified for the semi-final courtesy two wins from her two Round Rubber matches. In the final match of the day, the Italian ace, Sara Errani, will take on the 28-year-old Aussie, Samantha Stosur. Let’s hope the Thursday night is filled with
some scintillating action at our disposal.
