Maria Sharapova moves up to the second spot in the world rankings – Tennis News
Former world number one, Maria Sharapova, outfoxed the 22-year-old Dane, Caroline Wozniacki, in the final of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells on Sunday to clinch the first title of the season. It is the 11th successive
season for the 26-year-old Russian that she has won an elite level Women Tennis Association title. Sharapova outfoxed the ninth ranked Dane in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to register a majestic conquest.
The victory at Indian Wells has moved the Russian one step above in the world ranks. She has switched places with the Belarusian superstar, Victoria Azarenka, who pulled out of the tournament due to an injury. It was a disappointing
scene for the tennis fanatics especially considering the fact that the top ranked American athlete, Serena Williams, was already not in the draw.
Sharapova was left the highest seed in the tournament after the withdrawal of the Top-2 players and she lived up to the expectations by winning the title. She didn’t lose a single set in the entire event leaving behind the list
of six victims that includes Francesca Schiavone, Carla Suarez Navarro, Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino, Sara Errani, Maria Kirilenko and Caroline Wozniacki. The results would have probably differed if the 23-year-old Belarusian was still in the contest but the unfortunate
injury tilted the odds in favour of the Russian who gladly clobbered the triumph.
While conducting a press-conference after the conquest, Sharapova stated, “I've felt very good all year about my game. I have to be happy with the finals here. It's a very big tournament. It's been a good two weeks for me. I've
been fighting and playing some really good tennis. I have been thinking a lot and play some chess out there - I've had to play aggressive, defensive, and everything that I had. Today there wasn't time for chess.”
Sharapova has now 10,015 points in total. She leads Azarenka by 440 points and trails the 31-year-old Williams by just 350 points. The gap between the Top-3 players isn’t a lot and they will all be back in action at the Sony Ericsson
Open which will be hosted in Miami.
