Maria Sharapova on road to recovery in the quarter-finals – US Open 2012
Slender-legged Russian beauty queen, Maria Sharapova, is among the hot favourites for winning this year’s US Open Championships singles title but she is in real jeopardy in her quarter-final brawl. The third seeded Russian stepped
on the hard courts of the Flushing Meadows against the French powerhouse, Marion Bartoli, on Tuesday afternoon and received a real shocker from her inferior ranked opponent. The Frenchwoman rocketed away to a 4-0 lead in no time before rain halted the day’s
play.
No one expected such a rapid start from Bartoli against the in-form Russian world number three. She ignited the contest with all guns blazing and broke Sharapova’s serve twice in succession to get the upper hand in the contest.
Some sloppy shot making from the Russian diva certainly assisted Bartoli’s initial success but the contest isn’t over yet.
Both of these world class performers will lock their horns once again on Wednesday afternoon to take the contest where it was left last day. Bartoli will surely have a psychological advantage of having a substantial lead in the
matchup and will try to consolidate on her Tuesday’s hard work. However, it will not be an easy task for the 11th ranked French to take down Sharapova in a comprehensive manner.
The former world number one, Sharapova, is well known for making her valiant comebacks from dire situations in a contest. She has been the real dominating force in the running US Open Championships so far and hasn’t lost a single
set en route to the quarter-finals. She couldn’t get off to a similar fiery start against Bartoli but there is a lot of competition left in the match. Sharapova has a fair chance of forcing her way back to the top when the match will resume on Wednesday.
Adding to her the Russian’s advantage, Bartoli has never won even a single set against Sharapova in all of their prior meetings. The Russian has belted four straight sets victories against Bartoli to lead 4-0 in the all-time head-to-head
series. She certainly knows how to tame the French contender and it is strongly anticipated that she will eventually win the quarter-final battle on Wednesday.
