Maria Sharapova outguns Melinda Czink in the first round – US Open 2012
World number three, Maria Sharapova displayed an outstanding performance against the Hungarian native, Melinda Czink, at the first round of the US Open in New York. Sharapova gave her rival a straight sets defeat, 6-2, 6-2,
on Monday in a total of 67 minutes.
Sharapova told the media after securing the win, “It was a nice break in a way, but after so many weeks of practicing, you’re just eager to get back on the court. It doesn’t stick with you. I mean, personally, I’ve been part
of many different types of matches in my career. Looking back at that week, it was really special. It was so hectic.”
Both the players retained their initial serves in the match and gave each other tough competition by equalizing the scores early on. The Russian beauty then re-ignited her aggression and smashed Czink in the following games.
She was flawless with her second deliveries and returns. She capitalized on five out of the 10 break points she crafted in the match. However, the 29-year-old struggled hard to snatch a break in the initial set and seemed helpless against the champion, miserably
losing the set by 2-6.
The third seed attacked her challenger with three aces and double faulted once in the opening set. Although she had an average first serve percentage of 57, but she bagged 11 of 12 first serve points to remain on the top.
On the other hand, the world number 88, Czink, hit one ace and never commit any double fault. She had moderate first serve percentage of 54 and she pocketed seven of the 13 on it. Unfortunately, Czink was unable to convert any break points in the set and remained
at a disadvantage.
In the second set, the Hungarian tennis professional took a poor start and could not retain her initial serve. The 25-year-old Russian captured the opportunity and marked a 3-love lead. Like before, she received her desirable
breakthrough in the set and successfully swept the entire remaining games in the set to sealing the match with a bagel.
The former world number 37, neither smashed an ace in the entire set, nor double faulted. She had an average first serve percentage of 48, barely converting four of 11 points. However, the right handed Russian pounced two
aces and double faulted once. She had a relatively better first serve percentage of 65, securing 13 of 17 first serve points.
The Russian tennis ace will be contesting against the Spanish Lourdes Domínguez Lino in the second round of the tournament.
