Maria Sharapova overpowers Garbine Muguruza in the second round – Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2013
Russian blonde, Maria Sharapova, carried on with her winning impetus in Rome and won her second round battle against the Spanish underdog, Garbine Muguruza, on Wednesday. The reigning world number two took merely 64 minutes to
settle the contest in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the third round of the clay court mega event in Italy.
Sharapova has already won two WTA championship titles this season and is highly bidding to win the Rome title as well. She won her opening round match convincingly in straight sets and repeated the similar results on Wednesday
to book a spot in the third round. She took hold of the moment right from the beginning of the match and kept dictating her opponent en route to victory. She spared just four games for Muguruza in the entire matchup and displayed her usual aggressive game
play to register her 30th victory of the running season.
"She is a rising player from Spain and is playing well, and the conditions were windy out there, but I was able to adjust and win this match," Sharapova said. "I knew going into the match I needed to be sharp and as quick as possible,
and I did a few specific things well out there, and that's about it. This is a meaningful tournament for me. This is one of the tournaments I've won a couple of times, and I've also been playing here since I was really young. The crowds here are so enthusiastic
and give me so much support, so it just feels great to be out on the court here."
Second seeded Russian took a steady start and the score lines reach 2-2 after both players held their opening serves comprehensively. Sharapova stung two back-to-back break points in the fifth and seventh games respectively, and
sealed the opener at 6-2. She broke the Spaniard in the opening game of the following set and kept exerting pressure upon Muguruza. Another break point conversion from Sharapova in the seventh game proved decisive in the match and she came out as the winner
at 6-2. She will face the 16th seeded American teenager, Sloane Stephens, in the third round.
