Maria Sharapova pulls down Samantha Stosur in quarterfinal – Western & Southern Open 2011
Friday, 19th August, came with an exciting quarter’s knockout, as the former world No.1; Maria Sharapova took over the Australian world No.10 Samantha Stosur winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 and advancing into the semi-final
of the Cincinnati Open 2011.
Playing at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, Ohio, USA the world number five, Sharapova, played her 9th match against the Aussie. Astonishingly, the Russian recorded her 9th win against the Aussie world No.10.
Previously, Sharapova ousted Stosur in the Miami Open 2011, subjugating her in straight sets.
Reaching the 2010 finals of Cincinnati, Sharapova has shown extraordinary start to the American hard court season this year. After her Wimbledon final crush, the former world No.1 displayed a spectacular feat on hard court by succeeding
into the quarter-finals of the 2011 Bank of The West Classic, before losing to Serena Williams.
Defeating the 2011 French Open Champion, Na Li, the Australian world No.10 has considerably performed well since entering into the Cincinnati Open 2011. Yet to win any title in 2011, the 27-year-old has been exceptional in her
past 10 matches run. However, her luck disappeared when it comes to playing the former world number one.
Stosur jagged the first game opening first and switched the serve to Sharapova. Levelling the scores, the former world No.1 cleared game 2 with mere difficulty. The two levelled up once again at 2-2 before the Russian broke on
Stosur’s serve to lead 3-2.
Extending her lead further on, 4-2, Sharapova smashed excellent volleys to outrun the Aussie. Frustrating her challenger, the former champion broke once again in game 9 to win the set 6-3 and lead 1-0.
Continuing with set 2, Sharapova successively dominated again winning the opening game and breaking the Aussie in game 2 to lead 2-0. The Russian redid her previous 15 minutes, winning on her serve and breaking Stosur once again
in game 4 leading 4-0.
Adding to her back-to-back wins, Sharapova took out game 5 as well to lead 5-0. Finally Stosur broke free and won a match before she broke the Russian in game 7 to cut the lead to 5-2. However, that was it. The mesmerising world
No.7 won game 8 winning away the second set 6-2.
Sharapova chairs the semi-final to play against the world No.2, Vera Zvonareva, seeded 2nd, for a spot in the title match of the Cincinnati Open 2011.
