Maria Sharapova pulls out of the Rogers Cup – Tennis News
World number two, Maria Sharapova, has withdrawn from the on-going Rogers Cup due to illness. She was the third seed superstar in the tournament and thought to be the strongest contenders to be in the finals with the top seed Belarusian
starlet, Victoria Azarenka. However, the spectators will be deprived from seeing the Russian blonde in action as she is suffering from ailment, a stomach virus.
Sharapova didn’t practice on the Wednesday morning as per her schedule and that was the major hint for the tournament officials because something severe must have been wrong with her. Later, the news was erupted that she was having
a stomach virus and might not be able to play the tournament.
After thorough check-up from the doctor and a long discussion with the medics, the Russian beauty queen finally decided to withdraw from the tournament through a press conference. She commented, “I thought I’d be okay in a couple
of days, but I wasn’t able to practise today and there was no way I’d be ready to play my first match tomorrow.”
Sharapova who played in the final of the London Olympics on the eve of Saturday against the fourth seed American star, Serena Williams, looked perfectly in shape; although being battered away for a bagel and a breadstick but that
happened because the 30-year-old American was in cruising form. Nothing seemed wrong with the 25-year-old Russian. However, she failed to show up for a practice on Wednesday and later on revealed the disappointment of missing the Rogers Cup, contested in Montreal.
Sharapova further added, “It’s just a coincidence. I was ready to play here and I was looking forward to it because this tournament is a good preparation for the U.S. Open.”
The emptied spot due to the retirement of Russian is filled by the likes of the Kazakh starlet, Galina Voskoboeva, who failed to qualify for the main round at the first instance. However, she had a stupendous run in the previous
edition of the tournament having reached the quarter-finals from the qualifiers stage and defeated the two Top-10 players, one of them being Sharapova. So, it’s a welcome opportunity for her to make use of this opportunity.
