Maria Sharapova puts an end to a six year famine at the US Open 2012 – Tennis News
Former world number one, Maria Sharapova, has put an end to the long lasting drought at the US Open with a victory over the Russian compatriot, Nadia Petrova, who tried to upset the blonde by taking the second set but failed to
hang in there and just fight it out in the last battle. Quarter-finals has always been a very terrifying stage for the third seed Russian who has never went pass the last-16 stage ever since her cracking run in 2006 where she went on to claim the title.
The Russian completed her Career Slam in the French Open Championship earlier this year. She claimed the number one spot as well but failed to hang on to that ranking after her fourth round exit at the Wimbledon Championships.
Moreover, the Russian beauty queen was close on becoming the second woman to complete a Career Gold Slam but failed to deliver against the in-form American superstar, Serena Williams, who instead qualified for the historical moment
of completing a Career Gold Slam.
"I'm so happy to be in the quarters." Sharapova commented on clearing the quarter-final stage. "It has been so many years and it's a great stage to be at." She is on course to reach the semi-final stage but faces a tough competition
against the 11th ranked Frenchwoman, Marion Bartoli, who is already four games up before the match was called off due to rain and rescheduled to be resumed on Wednesday eve.
It is expected that the Russian blonde will fire back and claim the semi-final berth where the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, is waiting for her. The 23-year-old Belarusian played a three-set thrilling encounter
against the Aussie defending champion, Samantha Stosur, who failed to win the final set tie-breaker on Tuesday.
Sharapova is looking to revive the memory of the 2006 US Open Championship at the Flushing Meadows in New York. She is eyeing an emphatic ending to the Grand Slam campaign this year having played two finals already in the Australian
Open as well as the French Open. Let’s see if the third ranked Russian can register her third Grand Slam final appearance of the current season.
