Maria Sharapova ready to reclaim her throne from Victoria Azarenka – Tennis Special (Part One)
Do you still remember the times when the Russian number one, Maria Sharapova, was not considered a threat on the clay-court at all? However, over the course of past two years, the beauty queen of Russia has stamped her authority on the red dirt. You don’t believe it? Well good for you but just to enhance your stats library, Sharapova has won the Italian Open, contested in Rome, for two consecutive years. If you can’t play on clay, you simply can’t win a thousand points title especially twice in two years. So, that’s some achievement in my perspective. I don’t know about yours though.
And one more thing, if she is playing some emphatic tennis on red dirt that’s least conducive to her game style because she is so much better than on the hard court. So, what do you think about her future prospects now? Still think she is not that good on clay. Well, then you need to cut down your bias.
So, now the next question is that if she can reclaim her throne, once again? I mean snatch the number one spot in the world from the Belarusian tennis ace, Victoria Azarenka. What do you think? Oh wait, you already believe that she is not a good clay court player so your response is negative. I see!
However, I have some more facts and evidences to prove that she can return to the number one rank on the closing ceremony of the year’s second Grand Slam tournament, the Roland Garros French Open. You can keep counting on the Belarusian number one but her clever decisions like withdrawing from Rome won’t stop the likes of Russian.
Oh yea, now you are pointing at the two victories she had over the Russian in the season; two finals; two titles? What about the recent performance though and yeah, I totally forgot about the final in Stuttgart? What happened there? Did the Belarusian so called unbeatable queen just suddenly hurt her right shoulder or that was another stunt to save some respect? That is not a professional attitude by my standards; actually it is disgraceful.
Do you see what Sharapova has been through but she is still able to hold on to that number two spot. You remember the last year when she missed bulk of the season through niggling shoulder and ankle injuries. She didn’t make excuses. She was genuinely injured. If Azarenka is injured in reality, how can she comeback within a week and shatter a world class athlete into pieces. That is purely a negative attitude for someone who plays so well but makes lame excuses.
Sharapova is the deserving number one. She has been in the business since she was just 17-year-old. Where was the 22-year-old Belarusian when she was 17? Sharapova defeated the number one player, Serena Williams, in Wimbledon final when she was 17; who has Azarenka defeated? The first time she played to Williams this year, she lost. That tells a lot about the character of the number one player.
